Rear Door Vent Glass Construction and Retention

Broken rear door vent glass on your SUV leaves an open triangle directly behind the rear passenger window that cannot be fixed by slapping a pane against the outside of the door. This stationary glass does not rely on urethane adhesive; instead, it is nested inside an EPDM rubber channel run and mechanically locked within the door frame by a rigid vertical division bar. Because the glass is seated directly adjacent to the roll-down window, replacing it requires dismantling the rear door assembly from the inside.

To release the damaged pane, the interior door panel, inner weatherstripping, and vapor barrier must be stripped down to access the division bar's hidden fasteners. That track is anchored by a lower 10 mm bolt inside the door cavity and an upper Phillips screw concealed beneath the rubber run at the top of the window frame. I usually have to unbolt and drop the main roll-down glass out of the way inside the door shell just to gain enough clearance to lean the division bar inward and extract the fitted gasket channel.

Differences Between WD22 and N50 Glass

While the exterior profile looks rugged across all production runs, the glass between the two major vehicle redesigns does not interchange. The original WD22 platform uses entirely different door pressings and glass geometry compared to the subsequent N50 redesign, meaning the rubber channel contours and glass angles are completely incompatible.

Most rugged trims like the Off-Road and PRO-4X rolled off the line with dark grey factory solar tint. Base configurations occasionally used a lighter green-tinted glass. Division Bar Corrosion and Aging Gaskets

Because these vehicles spend decades on rough roads and through winter salt, problems in this corner of the door often trace back to the metal division bar itself. On second-generation models, moisture inevitably finds its way past the outer beltline molding (parts 82820-EA000 on the right and 82821-EA000 on the left). Once water settles into the channel, the internal steel reinforcement of the vertical bar begins to rust and swell.

This internal swelling pinches the rubber channel against the fixed vent glass while simultaneously binding the edge of the roll-down window. When replacing a smashed vent pane, the channel must be cleared of all fragmented glass shards and checked for frame distortion; otherwise, the new glass will bind, leak water into the bottom of the door shell, or produce constant highway wind whistles right behind the passenger's ear.
