Door Glass Replacement for 1991-1994 Rolls-Royce Touring Limousine
Working on a 1991-1994 Rolls-Royce Touring Limousine isn't an everyday glass job. These cars were hand-built in Crewe, and dealing with the heavy door panels, thick wood veneers, and massive window regulators takes patience and hands-on experience. When the door glass shatters on one of these classic limos, you need a technician who actually knows how to handle vintage British luxury hardware without putting a single scratch on your Connolly leather.
How We Handle the Repair
Unlike modern cars where the glass just bolts onto a cheap plastic clip, the door glass on these older Rolls-Royces sits inside a heavy metal lifting sash. That means we have to properly bond the new glass into the bracket. Here is exactly how I tackle the job:
- Protecting the Interior: The very first thing I do is cover your seats, carpets, and door cards with thick drop cloths. I also tape off the polished walnut door cappings so nothing gets scuffed while I'm working.
- Removal and Cleanup: I carefully dismantle the inner door panel and disconnect the heavy-duty window switches. Once I have access, I use an industrial shop vac to pull every single shard of broken glass out of the door cavity, the weatherstripping, and the regulator tracks. Leaving old glass in the door just causes annoying rattles later.
- Surface Cleaning: I unbolt the old metal lifting channel from the regulator and scrape away the decades-old factory glue. Both the metal track and the bottom edge of the new replacement door glass get wiped down completely with a specialized prep solvent.
- Primer Application: I apply a coat of high-grade glass primer to the bare metal of the sash and the bonding edge of the glass. If you skip the primer, the window will eventually pull right out of the track the first time you try to roll it down on a cold day.
- High-Quality Adhesive Installation: Finally, I lay down a thick bead of premium automotive urethane adhesive into the channel, set the new glass firmly in place, and bolt the whole assembly back onto the window regulator once it cures. Everything gets tested to make sure the window rolls up and down perfectly straight.
