Fixing the Door Glass on a 1963-1969 Maserati Quattroporte
Working on a first-generation 1963-1969 Maserati Quattroporte is always a great day in the shop. These early Italian sedans are beautiful machines, but dealing with their replacement parts—especially the door glass—takes patience and real hands-on experience. The door panels are intricate, the hardware is vintage, and you simply can't force things into place. If you have a cracked or shattered side window, you need a technician who respects the car and knows how to handle classic assemblies.
We Bring the Shop to You Across the GTA
You probably don't want to drive your classic Maserati around with a broken window, dealing with wind noise and risking water damage to the interior. That is why I bring the tools directly to your driveway or garage. We handle classic auto glass repairs all over the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Whether your car is parked in Vaughan, over in Richmond Hill, or out in Markham, we show up ready to work with the exact glass your Quattroporte needs.
My Step-by-Step Replacement Process
Replacing the door glass on these older Maseratis is very different from working on a modern commuter car. The glass sits in a metal sash channel, and the factory rubber or glue usually turns to dust after fifty years. Here is exactly how I tackle the job:
- Interior Protection: I always start by taping off the door frame and laying down heavy drop cloths over those classic leather seats. Shattered tempered glass gets everywhere, so I vacuum the inside of the door shell completely dry before turning a single wrench.
- Hardware Removal: I carefully remove the vintage interior door panel, window cranks, and trim pieces. The retaining clips on a 1960s Maserati are delicate and hard to find, so I use specialized non-marring pry tools to keep everything intact.
- Surface Cleaning: I detach the old metal lifting channel from the window regulator. I scrape out decades of hardened putty and clean the bare metal thoroughly with a professional solvent so the new bond holds tight.
- Primer Application: Bare metal needs protection to survive. I apply a dedicated glass primer to the inside of the metal sash channel to prevent future rust and give the new urethane something to bite into.
- Adhesive Installation: Finally, I run a thick bead of high-quality adhesive into the channel, press the new door glass perfectly into place, and bolt the assembly back onto the regulator. I roll the window up and down a few times to make sure the tracking is dead-on before snapping the door panel back together.
