Shattered Door Glass on Your Kenworth T170? Let's Get It Fixed
If you drive a Kenworth T170 built anywhere between 2008 and 2025, you already know it is an absolute workhorse. But even the toughest medium-duty trucks take a beating on Canadian roads. When a stray rock kicks up on the 401 or a worksite mishap shatters your side window, you need it fixed fast. Driving a commercial rig with a busted window is not just uncomfortable in our freezing winters—it is a massive safety and security hazard.
Common Reasons You Need a New T170 Side Window
Over the years, I have pulled plenty of shattered glass out of Kenworth door panels. When a driver calls me for a replacement, it usually comes down to a few specific culprits:
- Highway debris: Flying gravel and ice chunks from other rigs are the number one killers of truck glass.
- Worn-out window tracks: If your glass rattles when rolled halfway down, the track guides are probably worn out. Eventually, the glass binds up and cracks under pressure.
- Failed regulators: A power motor or manual crank that forces the window up unevenly will snap the glass right at the bottom mounting points.
How We Handle the Replacement Process
Replacing the door glass on a 2008-2025 Kenworth T170 is not a job you want to hack together with cheap tools. The T170 shares a lot of cab DNA with the T270 and T370, meaning the door teardown is familiar territory for an experienced tech. Here is how I tackle it to make sure the new window fits tight and doesn't leak.
First, I strip off the interior door panel. Kenworth uses heavy-duty fasteners here, so you have to know exactly where to pry to avoid snapping the plastic trim. Next, I vacuum out every single shard of glass from the bottom of the steel door cavity. If a tech skips this step, those pieces will rattle around while you drive and eventually jam the water drain holes, leading to rust. Once the shell is clean, I slide the new OEM-quality replacement glass down into the weatherstripping, bolt it securely to the regulator sash, and test the up-and-down motion to ensure there is absolutely no binding.
Checking the Weatherstripping
Before I put the door panel back on, I always inspect the rubber seals. If your rig is an older 2008 or 2010 model, that rubber is getting hard. A brand new window will not stop wind noise if the run channel seal is completely flattened out, so I will let you know if it needs swapping.
Don't Let Downtime Cost You Money
Time is money when your truck is off the road. You simply do not have time to sit in a repair shop waiting room while your freight sits idle.
