Replacing the Front Glass on a 2002-2003 Smart Crossblade
If you own a 2002 or 2003 Smart Crossblade, you already know you are driving one of the rarest cars on the road. It does not even have a traditional windshield—just that iconic, low-profile wind deflector. When that front glass gets cracked, chipped, or heavily pitted from highway debris, finding a shop that actually knows what they are looking at is tough. Most technicians have never even seen one in person. I have, and I know exactly how to fix it.
Mobile Service Right to Your Driveway
Driving a completely open, roofless car with a shattered wind deflector is a miserable experience. You end up eating dust the whole way to the shop. That is why we bring the tools to you. Whether you have the car parked in a heated garage in Vaughan, sitting in a driveway in Richmond Hill, or stored out in Markham, we cover the entire Greater Toronto Area (GTA) with fully equipped mobile service vans.
How We Handle the Installation
Working on a Crossblade requires a different approach than your standard daily driver. The exposed cabin means we have to be extra careful with our tools and chemicals. Here is exactly how I tackle the job:
- Protecting the Cabin: Because the Crossblade is completely open to the elements, I start by draping heavy-duty protective blankets over the waterproof seats, dash area, and the front body panels to catch any debris or old urethane shavings.
- Glass Removal: I carefully unbolt the specialized retaining brackets and cut away the old seals holding the damaged deflector. I take my time here to avoid scratching the paint or the exposed safety cell.
- Surface Cleaning: Once the old glass is out, I strip the old bonding material down to the bare pinchweld. I wipe down the entire mounting track with an industrial glass cleaner and solvent to remove dirt, old glue, and grease.
- Primer Application: Bare metal means rust if you are not careful. I brush a high-grade urethane primer onto the frame and the edge of the new glass. This step guarantees the adhesive has a solid surface to bite into.
- Adhesive and Setting: Finally, I lay down a consistent, thick bead of fast-curing urethane adhesive. I set the new deflector perfectly into place, bolt the brackets back down, and secure it so it cures exactly where it needs to.
