Replacing the Door Glass on Your 2010-2013 Peterbilt 384
If you drive a Peterbilt 384 from the 2010 to 2013 lineup, you already know it is a solid workhorse. But spending long hours on Canadian highways means your rig takes a serious beating. Stray gravel from dump trucks, extreme winter freezing, and just plain old door slamming eventually take a toll on your side windows. When that passenger or driver-side door glass shatters or cracks, you cannot just tape it up and hope for the best. You need to see your mirrors clearly to keep that heavy-duty rig safely on the road.
Why We Do Not Ignore Broken Truck Windows
A cracked side window is more than an annoyance. It messes with your visibility and lets the freezing cold or blasting highway noise right into the cab. As a mechanic, I see guys try to push through a few more runs with busted glass, but it always ends up causing more headaches down the line.
Watch Out for These Warning Signs
Sometimes the glass does not completely blow out. You might just need a replacement if you notice:
- Deep spider cracks spreading from the corner of the window frame.
- The glass gets jammed in the track or groans heavily when you roll it up and down.
- Wind whistling through the seal because the glass edge chipped away.
- Deep pitting from road salt and debris that ruins your line of sight to the side mirrors.
Our Hands-On Replacement Process
When I pull up to a job to swap out the door glass for a Peterbilt 384, I do not take shortcuts. First, I pop off the interior door panel carefully so we do not snap those aging plastic retaining clips. Next, we vacuum out every single shard of glass from the bottom of the door cavity. If you leave that stuff in there, it will rattle around and drive you crazy, or worse, chew up the window regulator mechanism.
After cleaning the track, I drop in the new heavy-duty truck glass, line it up perfectly, and test the motor before putting the panel back together. Everything has to line up tight so you do not get water leaks the next time it rains.
Quality Glass for Canadian Roads
We only use replacement glass that meets or exceeds OEM specs. It has to handle the crazy temperature swings we get up here in Canada. Thin, cheap glass simply will not survive a single winter of heavy frost followed by blasting defroster heat.
