Replacing the Door Glass on a 1992-1998 McLaren F1, LM, or GT
Working on a McLaren F1 isn't your everyday glass job. With just over 100 of these chassis ever built, handling the door glass on the 1992-1998 F1, LM, or GT models means you are touching automotive history. The signature dihedral doors and that unique split-window setup—where a smaller drop-glass section sits inside the main fixed window—require a technician who actually understands the mechanics of the car. If you have a cracked or shattered door window on your McLaren, I know exactly what it takes to fix it right.

How I Handle the F1 Door Glass Replacement
Getting the old glass out and the new piece in takes a lot of patience. The carbon-composite door shell and the complex window regulator demand a slow, methodical approach. Here is exactly how I tackle the replacement:
- Interior Protection: The very first thing I do is cover that iconic central driving seat, the passenger seats, and the carbon fiber sills with heavy-duty protective blankets. I tape off the interior door panel to make sure zero glass shards, dust, or adhesive get anywhere near the upholstery.
- Careful Removal: I carefully pull back the interior door trim. On the F1, I have to carefully disconnect the window regulator attached to the smaller drop-glass section. Once detached, I extract the broken glass and run a shop vac through the inside of the door shell to pull out every single hidden fragment.
- Surface Cleaning: The mounting tracks and pinch weld get a thorough wipe down. I scrape away any old urethane or weatherstripping residue so the bare surface is completely smooth. The new glass will not sit flush if the track is dirty.
- Primer Application: I apply a high-grade glass primer to the bare mounting points. This stops any potential moisture buildup and gives the new adhesive a solid surface to bite into.
- Adhesive and Installation: I lay down a precise, consistent bead of premium automotive urethane. We then carefully set the new OEM-spec glass into the butterfly door, align the drop-glass tracks, bolt the regulators back into place, and test the window operation before putting the door panel back together.
