Fixing Broken Door Glass on a 1990-2011 Mack MR Series
If you drive a Mack MR Series from anywhere between the 1990 and 2011 model years, you already know these cabs are built for serious punishment. We see them all over Canada, mostly set up as refuse trucks, front loaders, or concrete pumpers. But even a truck built like a tank has a weak spot. Out on a messy job site, the door glass usually takes the hit. I've swept shattered tempered glass out of these cabs more times than I can count.
Why the Mack MR Door Glass Breaks
These trucks don't spend their lives cruising smooth highways. They are constantly bouncing over curbs, navigating tight alleys, and idling on uneven dirt lots. That kind of daily abuse leads to a few common problems that end up costing you a window.
Top Culprits for Smashed Side Windows
- Job site debris: Flying rocks from loaders, falling branches, or stray material hitting the side of the cab.
- Cab flex: When you run heavy loads over uneven ground day after day, the cab twists. Over time, that pressure can bind the glass right inside the tracks.
- Worn window regulators: A failing regulator will drag the glass up unevenly. If it binds up and the driver forces it, the glass will snap.
Checking the Door Internals
Whenever I pull the door panel off an older MR model, I always take a hard look at the internal components. You never want to drop a brand new piece of glass into a rusted-out track or attach it to a motor that's barely hanging on.
My Shop Advice: Inspect the Seals
Before installing the new window, check the weatherstripping. Up here in the Canadian cold, old rubber gets stiff and brittle. If the run channel is shot, your new window is going to rattle loudly and leak cold air right into the cab.
Getting Your Truck Back to Work
Downtime costs money, especially with commercial heavy-duty equipment. You can't leave a working truck sitting in the yard just because of a busted side window. When I tackle this job, the first thing I do is vacuum every single piece of old glass from the bottom of the door cavity. If you skip that, the leftover glass will grind against the new window and jam the drain holes. After cleaning it out, I grease the regulator tracks and line up the replacement glass so it rolls up straight and tight.
