Vent Glass Replacement for the 1967-1975 Lotus Elan +2
Working on a classic British sports car like the 1967-1975 Lotus Elan +2 is always a great day on the job, but it absolutely requires a careful hand. The fiberglass body and the aging chrome trim around the vent glass mean you can't just force things apart like you might on a modern daily driver. If your Elan +2 has a cracked, foggy, or completely shattered vent window, you need a technician who actually understands how to handle vintage auto glass without causing collateral damage.
Mobile Service Across the Greater Toronto Area
You probably don't want to drive your classic Lotus down the highway with a busted window, exposing that vintage cabin to the weather. That is exactly why we bring the tools directly to your location. Whether your car is tucked away safely in a garage in Vaughan, parked in a driveway in Richmond Hill, or sitting in a restoration shop out in Markham, we provide complete mobile service across the entire Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
How We Replace Your Elan +2 Vent Glass
Swapping out the vent glass on these older Lotus models is a precision job. We don't rush it, and we don't cut corners. Here is exactly how I handle the replacement in the field:
- Protecting the Interior: The very first thing I do is lay down heavy-duty drop cloths over your seats, center console, and door panels. Old glass shards get everywhere, and the last thing I want to do is scratch up your classic interior.
- Careful Removal: I slowly back out the old retaining screws and ease the chrome vent frame out of the door channel. The rubber weatherstripping from the late 60s or 70s is usually completely dry-rotted, so I take my time to avoid bending the original metal frame during extraction.
- Surface Cleaning: Once the frame is out on my workbench, I scrape away decades of hardened old sealant, dirt, and debris. The channel has to be stripped down to bare, clean metal before the new glass goes anywhere near it.
- Primer Application: I apply a specialized bare-metal glass primer to the freshly cleaned frame. This guarantees the new urethane adhesive actually bites into the surface and holds strong.
- Installing the Glass: I set the new vent glass into the frame using a high-quality automotive adhesive, making sure it sits perfectly flush. Finally, I re-install the entire assembly back into the door, checking the pivot hinges so the window opens and locks tight just like it did rolling out of the factory.
