Back Glass Replacement for Lotus Elan (S1/S2/S3/S4) 1962-1973
Working on a classic Lotus Elan S1 through S4 is always a treat, but it requires a very specific touch. When you are dealing with Colin Chapman's lightweight fiberglass masterpiece built between 1962 and 1973, you cannot just pry out a broken back glass like you would on a modern sedan. The fiberglass body flexes, the original trim is delicate, and getting the rear window seated right takes patience and old-school know-how.
I have replaced plenty of glass on these British classics over the years. If your vintage Elan has a cracked or shattered rear window, here is exactly how my team and I handle the replacement to keep your car looking sharp and completely weather-tight.
Our Hands-On Replacement Process
We do not take shortcuts on vintage cars. Every step is done by the book to protect your investment.
- Interior Protection: The cabins in these cars are tiny and often packed with restored leather and vintage carpets. We drape heavy-duty protective covers over the rear deck, seats, and parcel shelf before we even pick up a tool.
- Safe Glass Removal: We carefully cut the old seal. Because we are working against a 50-year-old fiberglass frame, we use specialized cold knives and wire cut-out tools to avoid scratching the paint or gouging the fragile bodywork.
- Surface Cleaning: Old adhesive gets rock hard over the decades. We scrape the pinch weld down to a clean, flat surface. If there is any old butyl or hardened urethane left behind, the new glass simply will not sit flush.
- Primer Application: Bare fiberglass or exposed paint in the glass channel needs proper prep. We apply a high-grade pinch weld primer to seal the surface and make sure the new urethane bites hard into the frame.
- High-Quality Adhesive Installation: We run a consistent bead of premium, fast-curing automotive urethane. Then, we carefully drop the new back glass into place, pressing it in evenly so it seals tight without pushing adhesive out past the trim.
