Back Glass Replacement for Your 1972-1989 Fiat X1/9
Working on a classic Fiat X1/9 is always a good day in the shop. Because of that mid-engine layout, the back glass sits right behind your head, acting as the main barrier between the cabin and the engine bay. When that glass cracks or shatters, you immediately get blasted with engine noise, heat, and exhaust fumes. At AlexWindshield, we know exactly how to handle these vintage Bertone wedges and get them sealed up right.
Mobile Service Across the GTA
You really should not drive a classic sports car with a blown-out rear window. That is exactly why our mobile team comes straight to your driveway or garage. Whether you are wrenching on your Fiat in Vaughan, keeping the paint pristine in Richmond Hill, or getting it ready for a car show in Markham, we cover the entire Greater Toronto Area (GTA). We bring the shop to you.
How We Replace the X1/9 Rear Window
Replacing the back glass on a 1972-1989 X1/9 is completely different from working on a modern commuter car. The tolerances are tight, and the proximity to the engine means the seal has to be absolutely perfect. Here is how I tackle the job:
- Protecting the Interior: We drape heavy-duty protective covers over your seats, interior trim, and the rear engine cover. Shards of tempered glass love to hide in those tight spaces, and we make sure to vacuum out every last piece.
- Removing the Old Glass: I carefully cut away the old seal and extract any remaining glass chunks. We take our time here to make sure we do not scratch the surrounding metal, which is notoriously prone to rust on older Italian cars.
- Surface Cleaning: The pinch weld gets scrubbed down to bare, clean metal. Any old, dried-out urethane, dirt, or debris gets scraped away completely.
- Applying the Primer: We brush on a high-grade automotive bare-metal primer. This prevents future corrosion and gives the new adhesive a strong surface to bite into.
- Adhesive and Installation: I lay down a thick, consistent bead of premium urethane adhesive. Then, we set the new piece of glass precisely into place, ensuring an airtight seal that keeps engine heat out of your cabin.
