Diagnosing BMW Error Code 480501: Temporary Lane Detection Signal Loss

I see this code pop up in the shop all the time, especially on newer BMWs driving around the GTA. You are driving down the 401, and suddenly your Lane Departure Warning light flashes, or the steering wheel stops vibrating when you drift. That is the 480501 code telling you the front camera temporarily lost sight of the road markings.

What Exactly is Code 480501?

In plain mechanic terms, 480501 means your BMW's Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) camera could not read the lane lines. It is usually a temporary hiccup. The system logs the fault to protect you, shutting down the lane assist feature so it does not feed you bad steering corrections.

Real-World Causes for the Signal Loss

When I pull this code on the shop scanner, I never jump straight to replacing expensive electronic modules. Most of the time, the fix is physical. Here is what actually triggers it out on the road:

How We Fix It in the Shop

Here is my step-by-step approach to clearing the 480501 fault and getting your lane detection back online.

Step 1: Visual Inspection and Cleaning

I always start with the basics. Inspect the windshield area directly in front of the rearview mirror. Clean the glass thoroughly inside and out. Sometimes a simple car wash fixes the whole issue.

Step 2: Clear the Fault Memory

If the glass is clean, I hook up an OBD2 diagnostic tool and clear the codes. Then, I take the car for a test drive on a highway with clearly painted lines. If the code stays away, bad weather or dirt was your culprit.

Step 3: Check the Windshield Quality

If the code comes right back, I inspect the glass itself. Wavy, distorted aftermarket glass messes with the camera's focal point. If the glass is defective, it has to go.

Step 4: ADAS Camera Calibration

If the glass is in good shape, or if it was recently replaced by a discount shop, the KAFAS camera needs a recalibration. We set up the target boards, connect the computer, and reset the camera's zero-point so it knows exactly where to look.
