Getting Your 1990-2014 Western Star 4800 Door Glass Replaced
If you run a Western Star 4800 built anywhere between 1990 and 2014, you already know it is a heavy-duty workhorse. But when a stray rock off a gravel road or a busted regulator shatters your door glass, driving that rig gets miserable fast. You get wind, rain, and highway noise blasting right into the cab. Let's talk about getting that window fixed properly so you can get back on the road and back to work.
The Quirks of the 4800 Cab Doors
The 1990-2014 Western Star models share a solid cab design, but those door internals take a serious beating over hundreds of thousands of miles. I have pulled countless door panels off these specific trucks. When the glass shatters, it leaves a massive mess inside the door cavity. If a technician doesn't vacuum out every single shard, that leftover glass will chew up the window tracks or plug the bottom drainage holes, which quickly leads to rust.
What We Inspect During a Glass Swap
Slapping a new pane of glass into the door isn't enough. Here is what I check while I have the door pulled apart:
- Regulator health: Did the glass break from a rock impact, or did a worn-out window regulator bind up and snap the pane? I always test the motor, cables, and tracks.
- Weatherstripping condition: Older trucks often have dry-rotted rubber seals. If the sweeps are hard and brittle, they will scratch your new glass or let water soak your door internals.
- Track alignment: Heavy-duty truck windows will rattle aggressively if they aren't seated perfectly. We make sure the glass sits snug in the run channels to handle harsh Canadian highway vibrations.
The Removal and Cleanup Phase
First, we carefully pop off the interior door panel and peel back the vapor barrier. This generation of the Western Star 4800 uses a fairly straightforward bolt-in setup for the glass clamps. I lower the regulator to the service position, unbolt the broken remnants, and spend a good ten minutes just cleaning out the bottom of the door shell.
Seating the New Door Glass
Once the tracks are clear and greased, we slide the new Western Star 4800 door glass in from the top, angling it to catch the front run channel first. After bolting it to the regulator, I run the window up and down a few times to ensure it moves smoothly without binding before putting the door panel back together.
