Mercedes B10/008 Rain Sensor Implausible Value: Causes and Fixes

If you drive a Mercedes and your automatic wipers suddenly have a mind of their own, you might pull a B10/008 code on your scanner. I see this specific fault all the time in the shop. It reads as "Rain Sensor Implausible Value." Basically, the car's computer is getting a signal from the windshield sensor that makes absolutely no sense. Let's break down why this happens and how to fix it.

What Does the B10/008 Code Actually Mean?

Your Mercedes uses an infrared light sensor stuck to the inside of the windshield to detect rain. When the B10/008 code pops up, the light refracting back into the sensor eye is distorted, telling the computer something is wrong with the reading.

Symptoms You Will Notice

Main Causes Behind the Code

Before you start throwing new parts at your car, you need to know what tricks the sensor into sending bad data.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Inspect the Gel Pad

Look from the outside of the windshield directly at the sensor area. If you see milky spots, gaps, or bubbles, the gel pad needs replacing. You have to remove the sensor, peel off the old pad, clean the surface with alcohol, and apply a new one perfectly flat.

Pro-tip for gel pads:

Never reuse an old gel pad. It will never sit flush against the glass twice, and you will end up chasing the same B10/008 code all over again.

2. Clean the Glass

Thoroughly clean both the inside and outside of the windshield right where the sensor sits. A simple smudge or a thick layer of car wash wax can easily trigger the error.

3. Check the Wiring

Carefully pop off the plastic trim behind your rearview mirror. Unplug the wiring harness connected to the sensor, check the pins for any green corrosion, and snap it back in tight to ensure a solid connection.

4. Recalibrate the Sensor

If you replaced the windshield, the gel pad, or the sensor itself, you have to reset the system. Grab a high-end OBD2 scanner or a XENTRY tool, clear the old B10/008 code, and run the rain sensor adaptation process so the computer can relearn the glass thickness.
