Door Glass Replacement for International 9900i (1999-2002)
If you drive an International 9900i from the 1999 to 2002 lineup, you know it's a serious workhorse. But when that side door glass shatters out on the highway or gets smashed by a rogue rock on a job site, you've got a real headache. Hauling freight with a busted window in the dead of a Canadian winter simply isn't an option. Let's talk about what it actually takes to get that heavy-duty truck glass replaced the right way.
The Quirks of the 9900i Door Panel
The 9900i cabs from '99 to '02 have a solid, old-school build, but getting inside that door panel takes a bit of patience and know-how. The window regulators in these older rigs have usually absorbed thousands of hours of road vibration. Whenever I pull an interior panel off one of these trucks, my first move is to check the tracks. If a mechanic just slaps a new piece of glass into a bent track, it will bind up and snap again within a week.
What We Look For During the Tear Down
A shattered window leaves a mess, and the repair is about more than just the new glass. Here is what I always inspect when I open up an International door:
- Regulator health: Scissor arms get bent out of shape over time. We make sure the arms are straight and the motor isn't dragging.
- Track alignment: Years of slamming heavy truck doors takes a toll. The run channels need to be perfectly aligned.
- Debris removal: Glass shards love to hide in the bottom of the door cavity. We vacuum out every square inch so nothing rattles around while you drive.
Doing the Install Right
I don't believe in shortcuts in the shop or out in the field. Once the door shell is completely cleaned out, we carefully slide the new tempered door glass into the felt run channel. Next, we bolt it securely to the regulator sash channel, making sure the tension is completely even across the bottom of the pane. Then we test it. Roll it up, roll it down. If the glass drags or binds even a fraction of an inch, we adjust the mounting points until the movement is perfectly smooth.
Don't Forget the Weatherstripping
Older Internationals are notorious for worn-out belt mouldings. If your outer window seal is dried out or cracked, rainwater will pour straight into the door and rust out the bottom. We always inspect these rubber seals while we have the door taken apart and will let you know if they need swapping out.
