Replacing Door Glass on the International 9200i (1997-2014)
If you drive an International 9200i, you already know it is a heavy-duty workhorse. But when a stray rock on the Trans-Canada Highway shatters your side window, that cab gets loud and freezing cold real fast. I have spent years turning wrenches and pulling broken glass out of these commercial truck doors. The 1997 to 2014 generation shares a very similar door frame setup. The job is straightforward if you know your way around a door panel, but it still throws a few curveballs if you aren't paying attention.
What Makes the 9200i Door Glass Job Tricky?
Heavy-duty trucks take a serious beating out on the road. The door panels on these International models are tough, and the window regulators work overtime. Getting the old shattered glass out of the tracks without slicing your hands or leaving hidden shards inside the bottom of the door cavity is the hardest part. If you leave glass down there, it will rattle constantly and eventually jam up your drain holes, causing rust.
My Standard Toolkit for the Job
You don't need a massive toolbox to swap out this door glass, but you definitely need the right gear to do it cleanly.
- Heavy-duty shop vac: To suck out every last piece of tempered glass from the door bottom.
- Panel clip pliers: Use these so you don't break the plastic retainers holding your interior door card.
- 10mm and 11mm sockets: Your standard sizes for unbolting the regulator and glass sash.
- Heavy leather gloves: Safety first. Commercial truck glass is thick and sharp when broken.
Clearing the Frame and Setting the New Glass
Once you pop that interior panel off, you have to lower the window regulator down to the access holes. That is where you unbolt the broken bottom sash. Heavy truck glass is heavy. When you drop the new pane into the door cavity, you need to tilt it forward slightly to get past the heavy-duty mirror bracket, then level it out so it sits flush in the track. I always spray a little silicone lubricant in the run channels before sliding the new glass in. It helps the window track properly right off the bat and saves your motor from straining. Tighten the bolts down snug, but don't over-torque them or you will crack your brand new window.
Watch Out for Worn Weatherstripping
Before you bolt everything back together, check the rubber weatherstripping. Brutal Canadian winters destroy these seals. If the rubber is cracked or hard, replace it now. Otherwise, you will just be dealing with annoying wind noise and water leaks on your next long haul.
