B1005 Rear Window Defroster Relay Circuit Open: A Mechanic's Guide

Winter mornings in Canada are tough enough without a frosted rear window blocking your view. If your scanner just threw the B1005 Rear Window Defroster Relay Circuit Open code, your defroster grid isn't getting the power it needs to melt that ice away. I've chased down hundreds of electrical gremlins in my years at the shop, and this one usually comes down to a few specific weak points in the circuit. Let's get under the dash and figure out what's actually going on.

What Does Code B1005 Mean?

Code B1005 triggers when the Body Control Module (BCM) detects a break in the electrical path to the rear defogger relay. "Open circuit" is simply mechanic-speak for a broken connection. Power is trying to leave the switch, but it hits a dead end before it ever reaches the back glass.

Most Likely Causes Behind the Open Circuit

Step-by-Step B1005 Repair Guide

Step 1: Check the Fuse and Relay

Always start with the easy stuff. Locate the rear defroster relay in your interior or under-hood fuse box. Swap it with an identical relay (like the horn or AC relay) and test the system. If the glass starts warming up, you just need to buy a new relay. Don't forget to check the main defroster fuse while you're in there.

Step 2: Inspect the Wiring Harness

If the relay is good, grab your multimeter. Check for 12 volts at the relay socket when the button is pressed. If you have power there, move to the back of the car. Open your trunk or hatch and inspect the rubber wiring boot. Canadian winters make wire insulation brittle, leading to snapped wires right inside that hinge area. Splice and heat-shrink any broken wires you find.

Step 3: Check the Rear Glass Connections

Pop the trim panels off the rear pillars. Inspect the metal tabs glued directly to the glass. These snap off easily if you pack your trunk too tight. If a tab is broken, you can sometimes reattach it using a specialized conductive epoxy kit.

Pro Tip: Testing the Grid

Use your multimeter to check for continuity across the grid lines on the glass. If you find a massive scratch breaking the lines, you can use conductive paint to bridge the gap and restore the circuit.
